CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"Connie! What are you up to on this fine election day?" Cora smiled at her own jovial greeting. She knew Conrad was probably scowling.

"Well, I'm on my way out to see Arlene Emery and I was calling to see if you wanted to tag along." Things always went better with grieving widows when Cora accompanied him.

"Sure! I haven't talked to her since Saturday. Today might be a tough day regardless of whether Hobart wins or not. Seeing his name on the ballot can't be easy on her."

"I'm pulling around back now."

"Okay, I'll be right out." Cora jumped up and pulled her handbag from her drawer. "Amanda?" Cora slipped her arm in her coat. "I'm going to run out to Arlene Emery's house with the Chief."

"Okay." Amanda nodded. "Is Mrs. Emery doing okay?"

"I haven't talked to her since Saturday. She's struggling, but that's understandable."

"It is."

"If I can talk the Chief into stopping, I may try to vote while I'm out."

"Good idea. I'll see you later."

Cora dashed down the back hall and out the employee exit door to Conrad's car.

"What's gotten you into such a cheery mood?" Conrad scowled as Cora climbed into the car.

"Well, I just got off the phone with Dorothy Parish. She's wrangled your old friend Ned Carey into representing the Merchants Association. Dot is definitely the right woman for the job."

Conrad chuckled. "Ned's a soft touch. He grumbles a bit, but he likes to help."

"They've cut a deal, so she's happy. She also told me that Ned represented Hobart Emery on the partnership deal at the rock quarry. Did I tell you his partner was at the Merchants Association meeting and he complained that he got a bad deal with the partnership? Apparently, Ned drew up the documents for Hobart and Jeff didn't get anyone to represent him."

"Hmm. Sounds like he was asking for someone to take advantage of him then."

"He was young. He probably thought Hobart would be fair." Cora hummed. "He didn't know Hobart well enough."

"Hobart was a businessman and the partnership was a business deal. It was Hobart's livelihood, and he did Jeff a favor letting him in."

"I wonder if he feels that way. He seemed a little bitter at the meeting."

"There's Hobart's pup." Conrad pointed at the black Labrador that raced across the yard toward the car as he pulled into the driveway. "I think his name is Jet."

"What a pretty boy!" Cora Mae scrambled out of the car to pet Jet as Arlene opened the front door.

"Hi, Chief. So glad you came along too, Cora." Arlene waved. "Come in."

Conrad held the door open for Cora and followed her into the living room.

"Coffee or tea? I've got both here." Arlene walked into the kitchen.

"I'll take some tea, dear. The wind is a bit chilly today." Cora followed Arlene into the kitchen.

"I hope it’s not too cold to vote." Arlene smiled. "I haven't been myself yet, but I know I need to go vote for my husband today. It sounds silly. I know my vote won't count, but it's something I need to do.
